Course Outline
The course is designed to give Engineering students a general understanding of the legal issues they will face in their engineering careers and to enable them to act professionally and ethically. The course provides an overview of the South African legal system, and includes a general (but comprehensive) synopsis of the law of contract, labour law, corporate governance, and risk management in the engineering profession. The course also provides insights into the various entities which can be used for conducting business, as well as the legal implications of each type of entity. In addition, students are given an introduction to intellectual property. By the end of the course students should have an appreciation of the types of issues and risks that commonly arise in the socio-legal context of engineering practice.
Lecture times: There are 4 contact sessions per week in this intensive course.
Assessment: Completion of the assignment and the class test is compulsory. If students do not submit an assignment or write a test they will receive 0 for that assessment/test (unless granted an exemption). However, such students will be able to write the exam.
Assessment weighting: Assignment (20%), Class test (20%), Exam (60%)
Accreditation
