Bio
Sapna Mesthrie started as a lecturer in UCT’s Commercial Law department in 2022. She graduated from the University of Cape Town with a BA in History and Psychology (distinction) and an LLB (magna cum laude) and thereafter completed her articles of clerkship at ENSafrica’s Banking & Finance department where she developed a passion and a knack for financial services regulatory law.
After being admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa, Sapna returned to UCT’s Law Faculty as a Teaching Assistant. Sapna has dual expertise in a variety of areas of both public and commercial law. Sapna considers her vast knowledge of public law essential to the way she thinks about, analyses and teaches commercial law rules and regulation. In 2023, Sapna graduated from the University of Cape Town with an LLM in Public Law (distinction), focusing on sexual offences and criminal justice.
Research Interests
Sapna’s research interests and expertise include regulatory law, specifically financial sector regulation, and financial consumer protection in the form of consumer credit law and insurance law. She has also researched in the areas of sexual offences law and criminal justice. She lectures Commercial Transactions Law, Insurance Law and Banking Law to final year LLB students, and Business Law I to students in the Faculty of Commerce.
