Bio

Benjamin Cronin is a Lecturer in the Department of Commercial Law and an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa. Prior to joining UCT in 2023, he was a State Law Advisor in the Western Cape Provincial Government, and before that, a Senior Associate at Webber Wentzel in Taxation. . He holds a BSocSci (Economics and Law), LLB and LLM (with distinction) degrees from the University of Cape Town.

Ben lectures LLB and LLM courses in the Law Faculty, on both domestic and international areas of taxation. He has collaborated with the Faculty of Commerce to co-teach on the International Tax MCom programme, and has taught several service courses to non-law students. He supervises postgraduate students in the areas of taxation and public finance.

Ben is currently completing his PhD, focusing on lawmaking in the budget process, an area of law that has been overlooked by lawyers. His recent publications include a co-authored chapter on ‘Taxation, budgeting and expenditure’ (chapter 67) in South African Constitutional Law (Brickhill et al); and an article titled ‘Can National Treasury Dictate Future Spending? Unpacking the Constitutional Court’s View’ in Constitutional Court Review. He has also participated in various think tanks and strategic litigation matters, focusing on tax and budget-related matters before South African courts.
