Professor Tshepo H. Tong-Mongalo was educated at V.P. Manthata Senior Secondary School in Limpopo, and the Universities of Natal, Cambridge, Cape Town and Wits. He first joined UCT as an Associate Professor of Commercial Law in 2008 until 2013, during which time he taught Corporations Law and Advanced Company Law to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Following his 12-year stint at Wits University as an associate professor and professor of Corporate Law, Prof. Tong-Mongalo returned to UCT on 01 July 2025. He is teaching Corporate Financing Law and Corporate Law and Governance to LLM students. Prof. Tong-Mongalo’s academic career includes teaching and research positions at University of Natal, Durban; University of Nottingham, U.K; Cambridge University, U.K; University of Cape Town; Wits University and Monash South Africa. Prof. Tong-Mongalo started his academic career as an Academic Tutor for Interpretation of Statutes and Roman Law at the University of Nata, Durban, in 1996. After completing his masters studies at the University of Cambridge, he returned to the University of Natal in 2000, as a Lecturer and was quickly promoted to the position of Senior Lecturer in Business Law in 2001.

Over the years, he held Visiting Scholar positions at Cambridge University, (twice as the Colenso Scholar and Faculty of Law Visiting Scholar) and at the Robert H. McKinney School of Law at the University of Indiana in Indianapolis, as well as at Kelly Business School at the University of Indiana in Indianapolis. Prof Tong-Mongalo spent some time at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) as the Atlas Agora Visiting Scholar and as an International Visiting Scholar at the Brown International Advanced Research Institute (BIARI) at Brown University in Rhode Island, USA. He was also the inaugural alumnus of the Institute for Global Law and Policy’s (‘IGLP’s) intensive residential program on global law, economic policy and social justice at Harvard University.

Outside academia, Prof Tong-Mongalo served as a Candidate Attorney at Livingstone Leandy Inc., in Durban; as a Research Assistant to Justice LWH Ackermann at the Constitutional Court of South Africa; and as a Twilight Supervisor for Newnham Co-Op in Cambridge, U.K. His first formal assignment in Law was as a Law clerk at the Howard College Campus Law Clinic at the University of Natal in 1995.

Tshepo is the former Project Manager and Lead Expert for the Corporate Law Reform Project in South Africa between 2003 and 2008, which culminated in the enactment of the current Companies Act 71 of 2008 in South Africa. He was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa as a board member of Eskom Holdings (SOC) Ltd between 2018-2022.

He is currently a board member of the Railway Safety Regulator, the Deputy Chairperson of the Specialist Committee on Company Law in South Africa, a Commissioner of the South African Law Reform Commission and a Chairperson of the Takeover Regulation Panel.

He served as a corporate Law consultant for ENSAfrica in Cape Town, Mabalane Seobe Inc. in Johannesburg and Gwina Attorneys in Sandton.
