A Law alumnus, Livingstone Sewanyana (PhD 2014), has been awarded the prestigious European Union Human Rights Defenders Award.

In an interview with Pauline Alexander last year, Livingstone said ‘I hope that the findings of my thesis will guide states that seek to promote full citizen participation in the development process. I believe that an NGO regulatory framework that is more enabling will result in more investment in programmes which promote public accountability, transparency, and better delivery of social services.’

His belief and his work have received the international recognition they deserve. The NGO Amendment Bill is currently before the Ugandan Parliament and the foundation that he heads are saying it should be revisited as civil society organisations need to have a say in the way the State is governed.
