Teaching Assistants (TAs) | 2019

The UCT Law Faculty hopes to appoint a number of LLB graduates to act as teaching assistants during 2019.

As a teaching assistant you will be expected to tutor LLB students, carry out a certain amount of marking, and assist the students in your classes. In the Commercial Law Department you will also be involved in the courses that the department offers to non-law students. In addition you will be expected to fulfil a number of administrative responsibilities, including the invigilation of exams and tests (outside ordinary work hours). You will be given reasonable time in which to pursue your own research interests. We encourage TAs to register for graduate research degrees; candidates who plan to do so will be given preference in the selection process.

Each TA is allocated to one of the three Departments in the Faculty: Private Law, Public Law and Commercial Law. Please clearly indicate your preference as between these departments in your application and if you have no preference, kindly indicate that this is the case.

These are twelve-month contract posts, running from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019. However, provided your performance is satisfactory it may be possible to extend your contract for a further twelve months only. Remuneration for a teaching assistant in their first year is currently R12 927 per month. TAs who undertake further study are fully responsible for their tuition fees but may qualify for a discount subject to the university rules.

Please email your CV, a transcript reflecting your university academic results if you are not a UCT graduate, and a copy of your best piece of written work or a part of it (no longer than 8 000 words) to: Nikki Campbell, Administrative Officer in the Department of Private Law at UCT by 15 October 2018.

The applications will be considered by a selection committee comprising the three heads of department in the Faculty. Successful candidates will be contacted by 6 November 2018 for an interview.
