Justice Malcolm Wallis
After attaining his B Com (1970) and his LLB (1972) from the then-University of Natal, Justice Wallis was admitted to and practiced at the Bar in Natal/ Kwa-Zulu Natal between 1973 and 2008. Wallis served variously during that time as Chair of the provincial Bar, and as Acting Judge. Wallis was appointed Judge of the High Court in January 2009, and subsequently served as Acting Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal, the Competition Appeal Court, and the Constitutional Court. Justice Wallis was appointed to the Labour Appeal Court in 2010 during which year he was also awarded his PhD from University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. In 2011, Wallis was appointed as Judge of Appeal in the Supreme Court of Appeal, a position which he still holds.
Justice Wallis has been an active member of the General Council of the Bar, serving both as Vice-Chair and Chair. He has also served as Co-Chair of the Barristers and Advocates Forum of the International Bar Association (IBA), and as Vice-Chair of the Bar Issues Commission of the IBA (amongst other offices in IBA structures between 1994 and 2009). In addition to authoring articles in various legal journals, Justice Wallis was appointed as Honorary Professor in the UKZN Faculty of Law in 2011, and as Professor Extraordinary at UFS in 2014. He is also a trainer (ad hoc) for the SA Judicial Education Institute.
In addition to his Honorary Professorship, Justice Wallis holds a number of other honorary positions, including Honorary Vice-president of the General Council of the Bar; Honorary Member of the Australian Bar Association, and an Honorary Bencher for King’s Inn, Dublin.
The Faculty is very pleased, with the support of Webber Wentzel, to be hosting Justice Wallis as the speaker at the 2018 Ben Beinart Memorial Lecture. This Memorial Lecture is held in honour of Professor Ben Beinart, who was the WP Schreiner Professor of Law at UCT from 1950 to 1974.
