Over the last few years, the Faculty has been home to a number of students who have received a prestigious Mandela Rhodes Scholarship. 

The most recent recipient, a member of the Mandela Rhodes Class of 2020, is Jeremy Alan Phillips - who has just completed his final year of his LLB.  According to his bio on the MRF site, Jeremy is "committed to working towards a more equal and just society... he intends on using his legal knowledge and dedication to humanity to help build such a society."

MRF Scholar Class of 2019 included Hanani Hlomani, who has been doing his LLM this year at UCT Law in Intellectual Property law.  A winner of the UCT Law-hosted Kate O'Regan Intervarsity Moot Competition in 2018, while a Fort Hare Law student, Hanani "hopes that with the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship he will be exposed to like-minded future leaders from diverse backgrounds and to better himself as a person and as a future African leader whose mission is to see the continent soar within our lifetime".

UCT Law's 2017 Mandela Rhodes Scholarship recipient was Shamila Mpinga, who led the UCT Law Postgraduate Law Students Council while completing her LLM in Mineral Law.  After a rigorous national selection process, Mpinga was then awarded the Rhodes scholarship to study for an MSc in law and finance and an MBA at the University of Oxford in the UK - where she is currently based.

In 2015, UCT Law was home to two Mandela Rhodes Scholars - namely Richard Bryce and Musa Kika. 

Richard, at that time, was busy with his LLM specialising in Commercial Law.  His dissertation looked at retail banking in South Africa and the availability of access to finance.

Musa Kika has since returned to UCT Law and will be graduating with his PhD on 12 December 2019.

These scholars are selected from across the continent, and the Class of 2020 includes 54 recipients from 14 different countries.
