There’s an awesome mentorship programme for women law students that’s been running since 2015 and we’re looking for applicants for 2020 from UWC and UCT.  Called the Women in Law Mentorship Programme, this initiative provides a great opportunity for women law students at these two universities to learn about law in practice. 

The programme includes:

·      being assigned a magistrate to be your mentor for about 8 months

·      spending 40 hours shadowing the magistrate, learning about the courts and meeting all the role players.

·      a leadership development workshop

·      a careers in law café conversations day

·      a CV writing workshop

·      a well-being/ stress management session

·      access to a coach to help you with exam stress

Due to the generous funding of the Norwegian Embassy, there are no costs to any student!

The programme is run by the Democratic and Governance Rights Unit (DGRU) based in the Public Law Department at UCT in partnership with the South African Chapter of the International association of Women Judges (SAC-IAWJ). The SAC-IAWJ amongst others, aims to assist women to participate meaningfully in the justice system in South Africa and to assist in the provision of public legal education and information programmes. 

There are limited places – it looks like this year we can take 25 students from UCT and 25 from UWC.

Applications are open to any nationality . To be eligible, the following criteria must be met:

1. candidates should preferably be in their intermediate/penultimate year, although we will consider final years,
2. candidates must submit an updated CV,
3. candidates must submit a motivation letter stating why they believe they would  be good candidates for the programme,
4. candidates must commit to attending all workshops and meetings in the year which include a skills training workshop, a visit to a Correctional  Service Centre and a leadership training weekend.
5. candidates must commit to 40 contact hours in the year with their assigned mentor. No certificate of participation will be issued without this.
