Studying at university can be a stressful and challenging experience. The Law degree includes a demanding work schedule and reading load. We strongly encourage you to be aware of your strengths and your weaknesses, and to identify when you might need support.
Be proactive rather than reactive, and reach out to these services if you feel in need of additional guidance and support:
Student Wellness
UCT runs a full wellness service for students which provides general medical and counselling services. Have a look on their webpage for information and links to specific services. There is lots of information at the links to assist you in finding your way to the service you need.

The Writing Centre
The Law Faculty runs its own writing centre, the UCT Legal Writing Centre (LWC) on Level 4 of Kramer near Classroom 4A and the Private Law Tutors' office. The service is open to all undergraduate law students. So make an appointment to get writing tips and guidance from one of the Centre's skilled tutors, who are all passionate about law and passing on the skills required for success in legal writing.
The six LWC tutors are available for 30-minute consultations from mid-February to mid-May, and from August to October (excluding vac week). Tutors will provide feedback in terms of format, structure, language, and related writing issues. (But for queries around content, you need to consult your relevant subject tutors and lecturers).
While the LWC welcomes walk-in consultations, it is strongly recommended that you book an appointment to secure your spot. Please note that capacity is limited and each tutor's available times tend to fill up quickly.
Steps to booking an appointment with a writing tutor:
- Head to the booking link
- Select a tutor
- Choose a time slot
- Fill in your name and email address
- In the box under 'ADDITIONAL NOTES' please let us know what you would like help with
- Click 'CONFIRM' to book your appointment
- Email your daft or final document to your selected tutor prior to your consultation.
If you get stuck, or need additional information, drop the LWC an email on LegalWritingCentre@uct.ac.za
