Embracing the future? Interdisciplinary conference on AI & Law
Artifical Intelligence & Law | 3 - 5 July 2024
We are very pleased to be welcoming to the Faculty next week a great number of esteemed speakers, presenters, session chairs, and participants who will engage with presentations and papers on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and legal frameworks in a range of different areas. This conference serves as a crucial platform to explore the implications of AI developments and their intended and unintended consequences on society.
As a Law Faculty deeply committed to social justice and the pursuit of a sustainably just and equal society, we are particularly gratified to host this forum. AI technologies are rapidly transforming various facets of law and governance, presenting both unprecedented opportunities as well as profound challenges. This conference will delve into these complexities across several key themes.
Amongst a fantastic selection of themes and topics, speakers will address the ethical implementation of AI in company law and corporate governance, emphasising transparency and accountability in decision-making processes. One of our keynotes will focus on African voices of AI, looking at mother-tongue language data, natural language processing and opensource requirements. Discussions on AI's impact on intellectual property rights will highlight evolving challenges in copyright and patent law amidst technological advancements.
The conference will also spotlight AI's role in dispute resolution; the notion of data as labour and proposals to tax profits arising from data; tax avoidance regulation and AI neural networks; AI and autonomous weapons in the African context; and the impact of AI on business. Moreover, experts will explore AI's implications for labour law, analysing its effects on the digitalisation of workplaces and the need to examine bias.
In alignment with our commitment to justice, sessions will critically examine AI's influence on the philosophy of law and legal theory, redefining notions of legal responsibility and accountability in AI-driven environments. Furthermore, discussions on AI, gender, and the law will probe issues such as bias in assessments of creditworthiness; and the gendered context of deepfake.
This interdisciplinary gathering will foster collaborative dialogue and exchange insights into the future of AI within legal frameworks. By bringing together diverse perspectives across these themes, the conference aims to inform policy, shape practice, and anticipate the societal impacts of AI advancements.
We invite all participants to engage deeply in these discussions, contributing to a nuanced understanding of AI's potential to uphold justice and equality in an increasingly digital age. Together, we aim to navigate the complexities of AI & Law, striving towards solutions that promote fairness, safeguard rights, and enhance the rule of law globally.
