LexFutures, a legal data analytics provider based in Cape Town has launched a Constitutional Court Fantasy Prediction League in partnership with UCT Law@work and Juta Law

The competition aims to promote awareness of constitutional law in South Africa by awarding points to entrants who sucessfully predict how the Court will rule on upcoming cases and by awarding prizes to the winners of four different league divisions for students, academics, law practitioners and the general public.

Adam Steed, a director of LexFutures' legal technology parent company, Infology, says that the Constitutional Court is regularly asked to answer difficult legal questions and that the fantasy league competition is a way of promoting greater awareness of how the Court functions meet its important responsibility.

"Over the coming months, the Constitutional Court will be tasked with answering questions covering land rights, the boundary between free speech and hate speech and the application of the Wills Act to surviving spouses of polygamous unions. Often there are no easy answers to the types of questions. Law is usually taught through case histories, but by challenging students to predict the way in which the Court is going to rule on upcoming cases, we hope to further stimulate and promote their interest and understanding of constitutional law. And for academics and practitioners, the prediction league offers a fun way of challenging your colleagues to some healthy professional competition."

The Constitutional Court is the highest court of appeal in South Africa and is based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

The 2018 league opened for entry on Freedom Day on the LexFutures.com website. Entry is free and open to anyone. Prizes consisting of cash awards and sponsored vouchers from UCT Law@work and Juta Law will be awarded to the winners in December.
