UCT PhD student scoops human rights defenders award

On 22 October, in Banjul the Gambia, Mr Livingstone Sewanyana, Executive Director of the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) in Uganda, scooped the Sub- Regional Human Rights Defenders Award 2013, in recognition of his valuable and selfless contribution to the advancement of human rights in the East and Horn of Africa.

 

The award was presented to him by the Special Rapportuer on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders at the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, Ms Reine Alapini-Gansou, Mr Hassan Shire Sheikh, the Chairperson of the Pan African Human Rights Defenders Network, a representative of the European Union and a representative from AkibaUhaki, Nairobi, Kenya.

The award ceremony was organised by the Pan African Human Rights Defenders Network and took place on at the Kairaba Beach Hotel, in the Gambia, during the 54th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. The Award was received on Livingstone
