The Centre for Law and Society (CLS) at the University of Cape Town, is conducting research exploring the "pathways" that rural citizens in KwaZulu-Natal utilise to access justice subsequent to having been a victim of a social contact or property-related crime. Do they approach the SAPS and opt to use the courts system, or do they approach other, non-state parties like traditional leaders (chiefs, headman) or family members to find resolution? We are currently in the process of analysing the results of the police docket review conducted at four police stations in KZN and will soon be conducting more fieldwork.

CLS is therefore seeking to employ a research assistant for this KZN Project, to assist in:

1. Collection of relevant research and literature
2. Drafting literature reviews and annotated bibliographies
3. Data entry
4. Analysing quantitative and qualitative data (this includes sifting through large amounts of data in numerical and text form)
5. Setting up interviews and organising workshops

Applicants must:

• Be computer literate (in particular using MS Word, Excel & PPT)
• Know how to search online databases for research and literature
• Have some previous experience with drafting literature reviews; data entry and data analysis
• Be proficient in graphical representation of quantitative data (e.g. making pie charts and bar graphs)
• Have good organisational skills and be able to work with accuracy and attention to detail

Dates: 1 August 2013 to 31 January 2014
Times: Part-time, 20 hours per week
