Welcome to the Know Your Rights Campaign!
The Refugee Rights Unit's current advocacy programme aims to bring and share essential information on South Africa's asylum system to those who need to navigate it. Know Your Rights is based on eight central themes that represent distinct challenges facing refugees and asylum seekers as they seek to secure valid and legal status and access the rights that attach to this status. These themes were turned into infographics. Physical copies are distributed at advocacy events and in consultations, and digital copies can be accessed below.

Detention & Deportation
Caption
Detention and deportation is a persistent challenge facing refugees and asylum seekers flowing from how difficult it has been made to secure valid and legal documentation. The Unit discussed these challenges and difficulties at an event on 20 March 2025 at Philippi East Library.
Newcomers
Caption
The Unit discussed many of the issues facing newcomer asylum seekers at an event on 27 June 2025, held at Claremont Public Library.
Access to Education
Caption
Children cannot be denied access to schools on the basis that they or their parents are undocumented. The Unit underscored the importance of the right to education at its event on 4 April 2025 at Claremont Public Library.
Gender Based Violence
Caption
The Unit held an event on 8 August 2025 at Parow Public Library to discuss GBV and other issues disproportionately facing refugee and asylum seeker women.
Birth Registration
Caption
The Refugee Rights Unit discussed the necessity of birth registration with refugees and asylum seekers at the Bellville Public Library on 22 August 2025.
