Environmental and Economic Sustainability in the Development Sector

Dr Nick Simpson is working with Tearfund, an international NGO, to review and systematically explore academic and development practice literatures relating to environmental and economic sustainability - one of Tearfund’s three corporate priorities – as they target a meaningful and distinctive contribution towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals. This research project focuses on the very bottom end of the economic spectrum, supporting the creation and improvement of livelihoods and small businesses. It recognises, to secure well-being, it is essential to maintain the ecosystem and nature’s services at an appropriate standard. This work goes beyond safeguarding ecological systems however to consider the values and preferences people have in how they make up a ‘good life’, emphasising resilience, risk, community transformation, governance and inclusive economy principles. Operating in over 50 countries world-wide, Nick’s work with Tearfund aims to identify the principles that will inform the design and evaluation of projects to aid in evaluation and replication of Tearfund’s emerging sustainability-orientated work.
