New Leaves on the IMEL Tree in 2013

IMEL is very happy to welcome two new members to its ranks in 2013.

Ms Micha Lau

Alexander Paterson
The first is Michaela Lau who joins us as a lecturer. Micha will be teaching Environmental Law to LLB students and will also assist in the teaching of International Environmental Law and International Law of the Sea at the Masters level. She is an admitted attorney of the High Court and holds an LLB (University of Stellenbosch) and LLM in Environmental Law (University of Cape Town), both of which were awarded with distinction.

Prior to joining the Institute, Micha worked at a specialist environmental law firm in Cape Town gaining practical experience in the field of environmental law. She also held a part-time lecturing position at the University of Stellenbosch during 2011 and 2012, teaching students at the Masters level. Micha is a regional representative (Western Cape) of the Environmental Law Association (ELA) and has presented a number of papers in that capacity at workshops and conferences.

Dr Jenny Hall

The second is Dr Jenny Hall who joins us as an honorary research associate until 2015. Jenny has specialised in environmental law since 1994 and is a very well established environmental legal consultant in South Africa. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and LLB degree from the University of Cape Town and an LLM degree from the University of South Africa. In addition, she graduated from the Faculty of Law (UCT) with a PhD (Public Law) in 2011, with her dissertation titled ‘The Impact of the Judicial Control on the Public Administration of the Environment’.

Jenny has been intimately involved in the drafting of much of South Africa’s contemporary environmental legislation and has undertaken a diverse array of environmental legal consultancies for national, provincial and local environmental authorities and corporate clients. She joined the Institute as an honorary research associate in 2012.
