The complexities of overlapping regional commitments and global partnerships

Raisa Nyirongo's article

Dr Raisa Nyirongo’s scholarship was recently featured on the Faculty of Law page. Her work draws attention to a central question in African regional cooperation and development: how do African states manage the practical demands of multiple and sometimes competing commitments across subregional, continental, and international legal and policy frameworks?

Dr Nyirongo is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Comparative Law in Africa, based in the Department of Commercial Law, where she works under the supervision of Professor Ada Ordor, Director of the Centre.

Her research examines the ways African states operate within a dense network of legal and economic arrangements, each shaped by distinct political priorities and expectations. With particular attention to the African Continental Free Trade Area, she explores how continental trade ambitions interact with the existing frameworks of Regional Economic Communities and the interests of external partners. Her work shows that Africa’s developmental path is shaped not only by grand continental goals, but also by the day-to-day legal and policy choices required to manage overlapping commitments.
