The Faculty of Law's annual orientation & registration events provide us with the opportunity to welcome all of our new postgraduate students to Kramer. The Faculty is keen to ensure from the start that our postgraduate students feel welcome and at home in the Faculty. We have great facilities for postgraduates, and our Orientation and Induction programmes for postgraduates are designed to welcome you to your new academic space and to your postgrad "family" so that you know who is who and where to find what, both online and on campus.

In this video, the Dean of Law, Professor Danwood Chirwa, welcomes all our students to the Law Faculty.

To provide a thorough and focused orientation to our various postgraduate programmes, the Faculty offers different orientation initiatives, depending on the degree programme for which you are registered. Please keep an eye on the Orientation & Registration pages for coursework & dissertation postgrads and for research-only postgrads for details of the next programme of activities

ALL POSTGRADUATE REGISTRATION QUERIES must be emailed to lawreg-pg@uct.ac.za – those sending queries to any other email address will experience a delay in getting a response.

We offer all new research students (LLM/ MPhil degrees by dissertation only, and PhDs) a full week's induction (for 2024, this will be held between 29 Jan - 1 Feb) in our prestigious Oliver Tambo Moot Court. This induction is a week of sessions to orientate you across the Faculty, from where to get your coffee, to how to book a desk in the Postgraduate Library Lounge; from when research training seminars are held, to where the Dean's Office and the Faculty Office are. The programme is available here

For all coursework students (PGDip, LLM and MPhil), we run an intensive in-person session (for 2024, this will be held on 5 Feb) to clue you in to where your lectures will be held, where your lecturers can be found, how to find your way around the Faculty, where the cafeteria is, where the healthier food options can be found, and how to navigate your way to the Law Library.

With so many world-class research units undertaking socially responsive work in the Faculty, it's easy to focus in only on one's own area of study and overlook opportunities to participate in lunchtime seminars and evening events, potentially missing key insights into your and others' work. Our postgraduate orientation and induction programmes are designed to make sure this doesn't happen.
