Can I apply to do my Master's starting mid-year?

Yes, you can. If you're a South African looking to start your Master's in Law in the middle of the year, then you're eligible to apply to our School for Advanced Legal Studies for mid-year admission. The Master's specialisations open for mid-year intake are in the table below.

Where can I apply?

All applications must be completed on UCT's online application platform. Indicate that you're applying for the current year, and alert the Faculty's Postgraduate Unit on lawreg-pg@uct.ac.za that you have submitted a mid-year application. DEADLINE: 16 June 2025

Are there different types of Master's programmes?

Yes, there are three types of Master's programmes, as follows:

  • Professional Masters | Four courses and four associated research tasks
  • LLM or MPhil by coursework & dissertation | Four courses and a minor dissertation (25,000 words)
  • LLM or MPhil by research | Research only, dissertation (40,000 words)

Must I have an LLB to do a Master's in Law?

Not necessarily. Some Professional Masters (PM) programmes (Commercial Law and Dispute Resolution) are possible to pursue without an LLB, although your application would be far more carefully considered. While a number of factors would be taken into account, the need for at least a 65% GPA for your NQF 8 qualification, is essential. Evidence of interest and aptitude will be taken into consideration.
