Associate Professor Jennifer Hall
Jennifer (Jenny) Hall is an Associate Professor of law in the Institute of Marine and Environmental Law where she teaches environmental law at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She holds BA Law, LLB (UCT), LLM (UNISA), PhD (UCT) degrees.
Before joining academia on a fulltime basis in 2018, Jenny worked nationally and internationally for different sectors dealing with environmental law. She was intimately involved in drafting environmental legislation for all spheres of the South African government, including the National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008, the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act 39 of 2004 and several waste management by-laws. She has also been involved, and continues to be involved, in environmental compliance and enforcement work for environmental departments. Work in this area has included project managing the development of a National Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Strategy for environmental management inspectors for the National Department of Environmental Affairs; drafting a magistrate’s bench book on the adjudication of environmental crime for the National Department and Justice College; and training environmental management inspectors and environmental mineral resource inspectors. In addition to her consultancy work, Jenny was honorary research associate at the University of Cape Town’s Institute for Marine and Environmental Law for six years.
Jenny is currently a member of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Teaching and Learning Subcommittee and the World Commission of Environmental Law (WCEL). Her research interests centre around the environmental rule of law and environmental justice.
