A couple of years ago, LARC commissioned a film entitled This Land that was directed by Miki Redelinghuys.

The film centres on capturing the story of the Makhasaneni community in the north of KwaZulu Natal who are fighting to assert their land rights against a mining company that wants to mine on their land.

Instead of only being a film, This Land was used an tool that played a great role in educating and creating awareness about the various issues’ rural citizens face in the former bantustans.

The benefits and methodology of how this could be done was captured in Miki’s MA thesis entitled “IMPLEMENTING AN IMPACT STRATEGY FOR DOCUMENTARY FILM USING A COMMUNITY DRIVEN APPROACH: A CASE STUDY OF THIS LAND”.
