LARC's inaugural uMhlaba Film Festival

The Land and Accountability Research Centre (LARC) invites you to the uMhlaba Film Festival, a three-day event taking place at the University of Cape Town’s Law Faculty from 5 to 7 August 2025.
The Festival seeks to deepen public engagement on the interconnected themes of land, identity, and social justice, with a particular focus on rural communities in South Africa. The programme features a curated selection of films, including Mathonga Elizwe: Spirits of the Land, Umhlaba Wokhokho: Land of My Ancestors, A Piece of Ground and This Land. We will also be showing the third episode of our podcast series, uMhlaba Talks.

These films critically engage with issues such as land dispossession, ecological preservation, and inner-city housing struggles. As tools of advocacy, they invite reflection on the spiritual, historical, and political meanings of land in our society.
Through these screenings and the conversations that follow, the Festival will offer a space for students, academics, and members of the public to collectively reflect on and explore pathways toward land justice and restored dignity.
Light refreshments will be available on a first come, first served basis.
Please RSVP your attendance to any or all film screenings.
We look forward to seeing you!
