Rights of Nature in Africa Seminar
IMEL hosted the African Hub of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN) and the Wild Law Institute for a Seminar on the Rights of Nature in Africa on 14 July 2023. GARN is leading a global movement that promotes Earth Jurisprudence and works to transform legal and governance systems so that they recognize and uphold the rights of nature. The recently constituted African Hub of GARN met for the first time in person this week just outside Cape Town. The Seminar aimed to introduce key NGOs and members of the public to rights of nature developments from across Africa. It began with a series of presentations from representatives from Nigeria and Benin on rights of nature innovations in their countries, followed by a panel discussion on these and other key rights of nature initiatives with representatives from Benin, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. The panel discussion was facilitated by the Daily Maverick’s Don Pinnock. You can find out more about GARN at https://www.garn.org/.
