To wrap up the second teaching block of the Natural Resources Law course, the students visited the Philippi Horticultural Area (the PHA) in Cape Town to experience the complex realities of the laws relating to the conservation of agricultural resources. Nazeer Sonday, a small-scale organic farmer turned environmental activist, introduced the students to the ecological, economical & social value of the work his team does on his farm, as well as the immense value of the PHA itself. After a short tour of parts of the PHA, where the students experienced first-hand all the complex issues plaguing the farmlands, he introduced the students to the legal strategy they are employing in an attempt to save the PHA. The students also enjoyed a hearty meal cooked fresh on the farm with their organic produce - which was most likely the best part of their day.
