The Environmental Law Association recently held its Annual Conference and Student Conference at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth from 26-27 September 2018. The theme of this year’s conference was “Links between Environmental Protection and Justice”. Several of IMEL’s postgraduate students presented papers at the Student Conference on topics including water resource management, mining in protected areas and creating equitable and efficient access and benefit sharing regimes. Sandy Paterson and Amanda Mkhonza from IMEL participated in the Annual Conference presenting papers titled “Clarifying the interface between customary rights and environmental legislation: Pondering Gongqose & Others vs Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries & Others (SCA) 2018” and “Strategic water source ‘protected areas’ perhaps?” respectively. Sandy, Amanda and the students enjoyed a road trip there and back, where they were very kindly hosted overnight by the South African Institute for Heritage Science and Conservation in the Langkloof on Heritage Day.
