During March 2014 Micha Young, in her capacity as the regional representative of the Environmental Law Association (ELA), together with Sandy Paterson attended a workshop organised at the initiative of the Western Cape provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP), together with the IAIA and the ELA. The event was focused on capacity-building in the context of the recent amendment of the National Environmental Management Act (Act No. 107 of 1998), the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (Act No. 59 of 2008) and the promulgation of various sets of regulations. The presentations at the event, followed by discussions and questions from the audience, highlighted the increasing complexity of South Africa’s environmental laws and the practical challenges experienced by practitioners in implementing and complying with the requirements of our environmental laws. Both the ELA and IMEL hope to continue engagements with both government and other institutions in building capacity and knowledge of South Africa’s environmental laws.
