IMEL Well Represented at the 11th IUCNAEL Colloquium on Environmental Law

Prof Loretta Feris, Ms Micha Young and Prof Alexander (Sandy) Paterson recently participated in the 11th IUCNAEL Colloquium on Environmental Law hosted by the Faculty of Law, University of Waikato. The theme for this year’s Colloquium, which took place in Hamilton New Zealand, was Hetapuwae – The Search for Environmental Justice. Loretta and Micha presented papers dealing with marine issues, namely “A Customary Right to Fish when Fish is Sparse? Managing Conflicting Claims between Customary Rights and Environmental Rights” and “Achieving Equity in the Fishing Industry: The Fate of Traditional Fishers in the Context of the Policy for the Small Scale Fisheries Sector in South Africa and the National Development Plan” respectively. Sandy presented a paper building on certain work he has been undertaking with the IUCN Environmental Law Centre in Bonn, titled “Connectivity Conservation Law through the Lens of the Greater Cederberg”.
