During the first teaching block of the LLM Environmental Law Programme, the Principles of Environmental Law Students enjoyed a fieldtrip to the Co-Existence Centre situated in the pristine Baskloof Private Nature Reserve near Cape Point. The morning was spent in formal lectures in the Centre itself, which is powered entirely by wind energy, covering topics such as environmental rights, sustainable development jurisprudence and international environmental law. The afternoon was spent walking into the midst of the mountains to observe what it is the law seeks to protect, and specifically an illegal tented camp situated on the border of the Reserve and the Table Mountain National Park. The early evening was spent unpacking the events of the day in the largest hammock on the Southern Peninsular and listening to the inspiring stories of the Reserve’s owners, Ivan and Danielle Harris.
