Vanya Gastrow

Adjunct Senior Lecturer

Vanya Gastrow is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the Department of Public law at UCT and a Senior Researcher in the Justice and Violence Prevention Programme at the Institute for Security Studies. She holds a BA LLB and Mphil (Private Law) degree from UCT, and a PhD in Migration Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand. Vanya has worked as a qualitative researcher in the field of law and society for over a decade with a particular focus on migration, policing and access to justice. Her current work focusses on promoting and institutionalising evidence-based policing approaches in South Africa. She is the author of the book Citizen and Pariah: Somali Traders and the Regulation of Difference in South Africa.
