Professor Fatima Khan travelled to Scotland for the Global Law School's League Winter Conference held at Edinburgh University. The Conference, which took place on 18 February 2025, explored the form and substance of global community and solidarity. It sought to probe the questions of 'is there such a thing as a global community or society  and, if so, who is part of the global community?'

The paper that Professor Khan presented at this conference explored the Global Compact on Refugees and what it may offer to our understanding of solidarity. Some of the initiatives of the Global Compact, argues Professor Khan, appear to be doing preparatory work for the adoption of international solidarity as a human right.

The paper, entitled 'Reflecting on the Global Compact on Refugees - Is it an Expression of 'solidarity and community' and a Realistic Form of the Globalisation of Refugee Protection or Simply 'pie in the sky'?, is forthcoming in the Journal of African Law.

Professor Khan was joined by other UCT staff members who presented papers at the Conference. This includes Sapna Mesthrie, lecturer in the Commercial Law Department, and Zaida Essop, Director of the UCT Law Clinic.
