Emma Louise Backe is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre of Criminology, in the Public Law Department. She earned her PhD, MA and MPhil in Anthropology at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. Her PhD research interrogated the politics and temporalities of care for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Cape Town. She used feminist ethnography to investigate the gaps between official government policies of victim empowerment and survivors’ experiences of justice and psychosocial care in the Cape Flats. Emma also has training as a rape crisis counselor and has worked as a researcher on gender-based violence (GBV) for the Global Women’s Institute (GWI); the Gender, Health and Justice Research Unit; and the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW).
