21 March 2010 marks 50 years since the Sharpeville massacre of 1960, commemorated annually as Human Rights Day in South Africa. To mark this event, the Democratic Governance and Rights Unit (DGRU) of the Law Faculty at UCT, in partnership with the Political Studies Department at the University of the Western Cape, with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) are convening a roundtable discussion and public debate, to reflect on the legacy of Sharpeville and its impact on current human rights.

Representatives of the constituencies involved in the events of 21 March 1960 have been invited to make presentations on their current approach to human rights, and the challenges they face in practice. The presentations will be followed by public discussion and debate.
