In partnership with the Law and Society Research Unit at the American University in Cairo, and the NRF SARChI Chair, Faculty of Law, UCT, CLS hosted the Second Biennial Conference on Law and Society in Africa in Cairo, Egypt, from 1-3 April 2019. Entitled Africa and the Middle East in an Era of Global Fragility, this conference saw more than 70 law and society scholars from Africa and beyond (including Nigeria, Zambia, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa, Tanzania), gather in Cairo to participate in a diverse programme that showcased innovative research and socio-legal work originating from across Africa and the Middle East. Parallel panel sessions over the 3 days included: Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Law; Judges and Courts; Security and Policing; Child Marriage and the Rule of Law; Law in Fragile States; Religion and Rule of Law; Migration and Refugees.
