Dr Reema Nunlall-Hiralal
Reema Nunlall-Hiralal is a senior lecturer at the Centre of Criminology, Public Law Department at the University of Cape Town.
Before joining the Centre of Criminology, Reema lectured at the University of Pretoria, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Durban University of Technology. She holds a PhD in Criminology from the University of Pretoria, with a dissertation titled Towards a Sexual Harassment Policy Framework for Higher Education Institutions in South Africa. She also earned an MA in Criminology and Forensic Studies, as well as her honours and undergraduate degrees in Criminology, from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Reema has served as a sub-editor for several South African journals and was a scientific committee member for the 3rd International Conference on the Future of Women in 2020. She is currently an Executive Committee (Exco) member of The Criminological Society of Africa (CRIMSA), serving as Secretary and council member. Additionally, she has taught a wide range of Criminology courses, from first-year to postgraduate levels. Reema is also a member of the editorial board of Acta Criminologica: African Journal of Criminology and Victimology.
Expertise/Research interests
Gender-based violence, sexual harassment, cyber-violence, and crime prevention.
Teaching
She lectures Victims and Victimology (PBL5822S) at the postgraduate level, and convenes Crime and Deviance in South African Cities (PBL2800F) for undergraduate students in the Humanities and Law.
