The Judicial Services Commission in Zimbabwe began engaging around their appointments process in 2020 together with other legal stakeholders. In 2020 we hosted a very successful workshop which identified the shortcomings of the existing practices and made recommendations for reform. In 2021 we hosted a 2nd workshop in which a discussion was held as to how to action the recommendations
In addition, we developed a policy brief that reviews the interviews and incorporates the Lilongwe Principles for Judicial Selection and Appointment into that brief. In particular, the policy brief examines the manner in which public interviews are conducted, the nature of questions, how responses by the candidates are dealt with by the panelists and how the panelists score the candidates. The policy brief makes the necessary recommendations on how the Lilongwe Principles can be further incorporated in the interviews process.
