The Refugee Rights Unit, under the directorship of Professor Fatima Khan, is committed to providing direct assistance, support and advice to refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa, and also to engaging in research on key issues related to refugees, legal status, rights, social impact and other matters. This research is used to promote and advance the law in this area and further provides a foundation for advocacy tools in the future.

In addition, as a registered Law Clinic, we provide opportunities for Articles for law graduates seeking posts as candidate attorneys, and we also serve as one of the places where UCT Law students can accrue their community service hours (which is a requirement of the LLB degree).

To achieve our goals and deliver effectively on our mandate, the Refugee Rights Unit requires funding. While UCT subsidises core costs to a large extent, serving as host of the Unit's physical space, we are always seeking additional funding to support the scope and depth of the critical work we do - as one of the only refugee rights-focused law clinics in South Africa.
