Screening of “This Land” at Bertha House, Mowbray
On 11 September 2024, Bertha House and the Land and Accountability Research Centre (LARC) hosted a screening of THIS LAND, a 48-minute narrative documentary capturing the journey of the Makhasaneni community in KwaZulu-Natal as they fight to assert their Constitutional rights against the mining giant, Jindal Mining. Following the screening, a discussion was held with director Miki Redelinghuys of Plexus Films and the documentary’s main protagonist, Reverend Mbhekiseni Mavuso, a prominent land activist. Together with the audience, the speakers underscored the importance of expanding communication channels to address the challenges faced by rural communities affected by mining. The panel discussion included insights from Nokwanda Sihlali, a researcher at LARC, and Luvo Mnyobe, the Narrative Justice Coordinator at Bertha House, both of whom highlighted the critical need for dialogue and community engagement on issues impacting rural land and rights.
