LARC's mining team attend the Corruption Watch Workshop, North West
Corruption Watch (CW) invited LARC’s mining team to attend and present at its advocacy workshop with traditional leaders in the North West (Rustenburg) on 4 July 2024. Ncedo Mngqibisa, Fezeka Ntsanwisi, and Thiyane Duda represented LARC. The workshop, which formed part of CW’s Rally Efforts to Accelerate Progress Project, was aimed at engaging with traditional leaders from the North West to educate and foster greater inclusion of community voices (particularly women and youth) in the decision-making processes of all mining activities on their land. CW also invited Fezeka and Ncedo to present on mining and land policies that require consultation, consent, and the inclusion of rural communities affected by mining in decision-making processes and the negotiation of compensation. They shared insights on the MPRDA consultation requirement and the IPILRA consent requirement, as well as their experiences concerning challenges faced by communities they work with regarding these issues. LARC’s inputs were well received, and the traditional leaders in attendance felt empowered by the presentation share and requested LARC to present this information to their local communities.
