On Tuesday 24 February Dr. Charlene Musiza delivered a presentation at the H2i Accelera Africa workshop organised by the African Leadership University in partnership with the Health Innovation Hub. Her presentation titled ‘Intellectual Property & Regulatory Strategies for Early-Stage Health Innovators in Africa’ provided practical guidance to African health startups navigating IP and regulatory challenges across diverse African markets. Dr. Musiza explained why IP matters for early‑stage ventures, highlighting its role in strengthening competitiveness, enhancing credibility, attracting investment and supporting regulatory alignment. She outlined the key IP rights and how they apply to health‑technology innovations. The presentation explored the structure of IP and regulatory systems in Uganda, Nigeria, Botswana and Chad as well as the Patent Cooperation Treaty for multi‑country filings. A key focus of the session was importance of identifying protectable elements early in the innovation process. She emphasised that IP rights are territorial, meaning that start-ups must strategically select filing jurisdictions aligned with their expansion plans. Dr. Musiza highlighted how effective IP strategies can support investment readiness, enable partnerships and facilitate technology transfer. She cautioned entrepreneurs to remain mindful of potential IP infringement risks, noting that healthcare is one of the most IP-intensive and highly regulated sectors. To illustrate successful African innovation pathways, she shared examples from Cameroon, Kenya and South Africa, where IP had been used strategically to scaling of innovations. She concluded by outlining cost‑effective IP strategies for resource constrained start-ups, including provisional patent filings, the use of utility models, early brand protection and trade secret management.
