Editors

Desmond O. Oriakhogba is an Associate Professor in the University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa. He coordinates the Innovation and Data Law Hub of UWC’s Centre for African Fintech, Innovation and Law. He is also a visiting Professor at the Law School, University of Strathmore, Nairobi, Kenya, and an independent consultant with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) under which capacity he tutors in WIPO Academy’s Distance Learning Program. Desmond is a South African National Research Foundation (NRF) C2-rated Researcher (recognised as an established researcher in the field of IP law), and a Queen Elizabeth Scholar (Canada). He is an associate editor of the South African IP Law Journal and African Journal of Legal Studies. Desmond is part of several high-level international academic networks of researchers, consultants, advocates and academics including the Open Africa Innovation Research (Open AIR) Network. Desmond obtained his LLM and LLB degrees from the University of Benin in 2014 and 2007 respectively, and PhD in commercial law (focus on IP and competition law) from UCT, South Africa in 2019. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2008

Dr Charlene Musiza is Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Commercial Law Department, University of Cape Town holds an LLB degree from the University of Zimbabwe, an LLM degree (specialising in Commercial Law) and a PhD in Commercial Law from the University of Cape Town. She is a lawyer licensed to practice in Zimbabwe, and has previously worked as legal associate at a law firm, focusing on corporate and commercial law. She is a Queen Elizabeth Scholar – Advanced Scholar (QES-AS) and has worked at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). She is part of the New and Emerging Researchers group of the Open African Innovation Research Network (Open AIR). Dr Musiza has published on various IP-related topics, and has consulted on developing sector-specific IP policies and designing appropriate legal protection schemes for SMEs.

Sand Mba-Kalu is the founder of the International Trade & Research Centre (ITRC) and an International Trade Expert. He serves as Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the All Africa Intellectual Property Summit and has extensive expertise in Business Development, Consultancy, Research, and Policy design across Africa. He obtained a Bachelor’s in International Trade and a Master’s in Business & Management, both from the University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom. He is currently a PhD student at the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, University of Cape Town, South Africa. Sand's research focuses on Policy development and practice. He has held notable positions, including Lead National Technical Working Group on Geographical Indications and is a professional member of several organisations, such as the Chartered Management Institute and the Abuja Chamber of Commerce. Sand has published multiple industry reports and book chapters, including works on the African Continental Free Trade Area and sustainability in the ECOWAS region.

Dr. Anthony Kakooza is currently a Partner in the law firm of Byenkya, Kihika & Co. Advocates in charge of the firm’s Intellectual Property (IP) practice. He is also the Acting Head of the Commercial Law Department at the School of Law, Makerere University, Kampala, where he teaches IP and Cyber Law. He is a Visiting Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the University of Illinois in the U.S; Shandong University in China and University of Venda in South Africa. He has previously held Visiting Professorship positions at Cornell Law School in the U.S.; Masaryk University in the Czech Republic; and University of Rwanda. Dr. Kakooza is also the current Chair of the Intellectual Property Cluster of the Uganda Law Society. He also undertakes IP consultancies for Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), Africa Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). He was recently recognized by the World Trademark Review (WTR) as a WTR Global Leader 2025 and trademark expert in Uganda.

Dr Lineekela Ihuhua earned her PhD in law from the University of Cape Town and a Master of Laws from the University of Stellenbosch. Additionally, she possesses a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education from the University of Namibia. With more than ten years of experience in higher education, she made the shift to private legal practice in 2024. Lineekela has authored several peer-reviewed articles, presented at various conferences, and is currently involved in two book projects with LexisNexis and Taylor & Francis. Her areas of interest include Intellectual Property law, as well as commercial law and their relationship with development.
