Corporate & Financial markets law (CFML) conference
Postdoctoral research fellow at the DSI-NRF SARChI Research Chair: Intellectual Property, Innovation & Development, Dr Elfas Torerai, played a leading role in the successful hosting of the Corporate & Financial markets law (CFML) conference recently. The conference was held at the University of Cape Town (UCT) from October 29 to 31.
The CFML conference is organised by North West University (NWU). This year marked the fifth edition of the conference which was held jointly with UCT’s Department of Commercial Law. The conference was held under the theme: "Towards Robust ESG and Corporate Governance Regulatory Frameworks to Curb Maladministration, Unethical Conduct, and Financial Crime in Financial Institutions, Organisations, Companies, and Financial Markets."
The three-day gathering provided a valuable platform for experienced and emerging scholars to exchange ideas on pressing issues affecting the commercial law domain. In line with the theme, delegates presented papers ranging from corporate law, financial technology and innovation, financial crimes, banking law, to legal education.
For his part, Dr Torerai presented a paper titled: "The Catalytic Role of Consumer Education in Driving Uganda’s Fintech Boom: Lessons for South Africa." In addition, he chaired the first session of the conference and moderated a virtual book launch. Together with fellow UCT postdoctoral researcher, Dr Sebastian Krafzik, the two coordinated the everyday running of the conference. They were usually the first people to arrive and the last to leave.
