Our Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr Elfas Torerai (LLD), recently participated in the 2nd Dialogue on Consumer Protection, jointly hosted by the University Of Pretoria, Faculty of Law and the University of Johannesburg.
Held under the theme “The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 at 15 Years: Reflections on the Impact, Institutions and Promises,” the dialogue brought together around 80 participants from academia, legal practice and regulatory institutions.

Dr Torerai chaired a parallel session on Artificial Intelligence, Algorithmic Governance and Consumer Protection, featuring papers on issues ranging from bias and unfairness in the AI era to AI governance, liability and accountability.

He also presented his ongoing research titled “Digital Branding, Influencer Marketing, and Fintech-Driven Consumerism: Rethinking Consumer Protection under South Africa’s Consumer Protection Act.” The paper considers whether the CPA is adequately equipped for the realities of the digital economy, particularly the rapid growth of fintech services, digital platforms and influencer marketing.

The presentation sparked valuable feedback and ideas, which Dr Torerai will now take forward in developing the full paper.

It was also a wonderful opportunity to connect with colleagues from UCT and institutions across South Africa. We look forward to seeing this research develop!
