- Ogo Monye, CCLA PhD student awarded the Udo Reifner prize at the 2019 International Association of Consumer Law (IACL)
Ogo Monye, PhD student at the CCLA won the Udo Reifner prize for best abstract by a young scholar at the International Association of Consumer Law conference held June 13-15 2019, at the McKinney School of Law, Indiana University, Indiana, USA. This biennial conference provides a forum for leading international scholars, practitioners, representatives of consumer organizations, public authorities and business to discuss issues relevant to consumer protection from varied perspectives including financial regulation, artificial intelligence, blockchain, standardization, dispute resolution and e-commerce.
Ogo presented on the topic ‘Identification Management in Nigeria: Innovations for Financial Inclusion’ and highlighted the impact of a lack of identification documentation on access to financial services for financially excluded persons.
- CCLA and the WTO co-hosted a Research Workshop
The CCLA and the World Trade Organization (WTO) successfully co-hosted a Workshop on WTO and Regional Integration in Africa between 10 and 11 April 2019 at the University of Cape Town, Law Faculty, Moot Court. Dignitaries present at the Workshop included: A/Prof. Ada Ordor, Prof. Danwood Chirwa, Mr Johan Human, Dr Shamiso, Dr. Maarten Smeets and Adjunct Prof. Faizel Ismail among others.

NIALS Founders Day Lecture 26 March, 2019
On Tuesday, 26 March 2019, Professor Faizel Ismail, Adjunct Professor at the Centre of Comparative Law in Africa, University of Cape Town, delivered the Founder’s Day Lecture (FDL) which was organised by the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Founders’ Day Lecture Series was instituted as a fitting tribute to the legacy of the founding fathers of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and as a commemoration of the opening of the Institute in 1979. Dignitaries present at the occasion included the Director-General, NIALS, Professor Adedeji Adekunle, SAN, the President, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Mr Babatunde Ruwase, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun VC, Lagos State University among others.

The 5th anniversary reunion conference of the Olu Akinkugbe Business Law in Africa Fellowship
On Thursday, 29 November 2018, the CCLA and the Lagos Business School co-hosted the 5th anniversary reunion conference event of the Olu Akinkugbe Business Law in Africa Fellowship in Lagos, Nigeria and which coincided with the 90th birthday of Chief Olu Akinkugbe CFR.

CCLA MPhil Graduate in Comparative Law in Africa accepted for the 2018 Stanford University International Junior Faculty Forum
Sonya Cotton is off to Stanford University in the USA to present a paper at the 11th International Junior Faculty Forum. The title of her research paper is “Do equality and non-discrimination apply to the ‘other’ wife in an African customary marriage? A comparison of the constitutional and statutory position of polygyny in the African Commonwealth”. The 11th IJFF will be held at Stanford Law School, California between 18 – 20 October 2018. Sonya obtained her MPhil degree at UCT in 2018.

Professor Peter Akper SAN visited the CCLA on a one-month Fellowship CCLA
Prof Akper SAN, the former Director of Research at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) was a visiting Scholar at the CCLA in August 2018. In addition to conducting research, Prof Akper participated in the Comparative Mineral Law in Africa LLM course where he taught classes on Artisanal Mining in Africa, one of his areas of expertise.

Capacity Building
The pioneering activity of CCLA’s capacity-building engagement under the TY Danjuma Fund is the training of early career Law academics in research skills. The first of these training events is scheduled for 20 – 23 September 2016 and will cover ten Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) researchers. This initiative, which is located in UCT’s Afropolitan mission, is modelled after UCT’s Emerging Researchers’ Programme and is facilitated by UCT Law Faculty academics from various departments and research units. The objective is to equip participants with tools for initiating, undertaking and publishing Africa-focused research. For more information see the Programme for the research workshop.

Partnership Building
CCLA’s Africa partnership building has led to the institution of its academic visitors programme with the endowment of the distinguished Olu Akinkugbe Business Law in Africa Fellowship (OABLAF) commencing in 2014 with the inaugural visiting fellow expected from the Lagos Business School in October 2014. The Fellowship supports the conduct and publication of research to advance and improve business law and policy frameworks across Africa. The CCLA is further pleased to announce the endowment in 2014 of the TY Danjuma Fund for Law and Policy Development in Africa to be applied towards research, capacity building and research dissemination events aimed at addressing African issues with African solutions in response to the ongoing changes in the economic, social and political landscape of the continent, including the growing global investment interest in the continent. Both the Olu Akinkugbe Business Law in Africa Fellowship and the TY Danjuma Fund for Law and Policy Development in Africa were launched at a UCT-CCLA event held in Lagos on 6th May 2014 hosted by the Vice-Chancellor of UCT, Dr Max Price and attended by distinguished benefactors Chief Olu Akinkugbe CON and Gen TY Danjuma GCON, among other eminent guests.

Journal of Comparative Law in Africa
The Centre for Comparative Law in Africa (CCLA) has produced the first edition of its Journal of Comparative Law in Africa (JCLA). The journal published by Juta Press Cape Town, launched in the first quarter of 2014. The journal has as Editor-in-chief Professor Salvatore Mancuso, Chair in Comparative Law in Africa at UCT, supported by an eminent scientific and editorial board. The inaugural edition features articles on various issues by contributors within and outside the African continent and aptly has as its debut article a keynote paper on Legal Education in an Era of Globalisation and the Challenge of Development by Professor Muna Ndulo professor of Law at Cornell Law School and Director of Institute for African Development at Cornell University. - Guest Lecture by Chief Richard Akinjide CON, SAN
The CCLA secured the visit of Chief Richard Akinjide, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to deliver the first Faculty of Law guest lecture of the year on 25th February 2014, titled “Currency and Power are Synonymous.” At 83 and in his 58th year of legal practice, Chief Akinjide is Nigeria’s oldest practising lawyer and the leader of the Bar, a former member of parliament and Minister of Education in the 1960s and Attorney-General and Minister of Justice in the 1980s among many other accomplishments. NRF Rating and GFLJD Appointment
In 2013, CCLA Chair, Professor Salvatore Mancuso received the status of a rated researcher from the National Research Foundation (NRF). Subsequently in April 2014, Prof Mancuso was appointed one of two co-ordinators of the thematic working group on Justice and Rule of Law at the Global Forum on Law Justice and Development (GFLJD). A CCLA research project to map Somaliland customary law, funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) commenced with a trip led by the Principal Investigator, Professor Salvatore Mancuso, to Somaliland to carry out a technical analysis and determination of the project structure. The CCLA is collaborating on the project with the Faculty of Law at the University of Hargeisa, Somaliland with whom the UCT Faculty of Law has a co-operation agreement. This is the second grant to the CCLA from the NRF. In 2012, a grant made under the NRF Knowledge Fields Development category funded the inaugural Comparative Law in Africa Methodology Workshop which brought together comparative law experts from various institutions in Africa and beyond.
The CCLA is also host to the Mineral Law in Africa (MLiA) research project led by Professor Hanri Mostert, focusing on the mapping of the mineral law and policy framework in various African countries, with the objective of producing a library of books on mineral law and governance in Africa. This project is aimed at making the knowledge of different African mineral law systems more accessible while engaging critically with issues of governance in the extractive industries and their implications for host communities and countries. Seed funding for the project was provided through a grant from the UCT Programme for the Enhancement of Research Capacity (PERC).
