Until Everyone Is Safe
World Refugee Day, observed globally on June 20, honours the resilience of over 117 million forcibly displaced people. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) campaigning under the theme Until Everyone Is Safe to uphold the fundamental right to seek asylum.
At one of the events addressed by Professor Khan this year, she delivered a compelling address to refugees and South Africans on the causes and consequences of statelessness. The event, focusing on the meaning of belonging, was hosted by Dr Shirley Gunn, Director of the Human Rights Media Centre.
